Refining the IVI Experience: Exploring Opportunities Beyond the Dashboard, a panel led by George Ayres
George Ayres served as track chair at AutoTech Detroit 2024 and closed the week moderating “Refining the IVI Experience: Exploring Opportunities Beyond the Dashboard,” a panel on what it takes to turn in-vehicle infotainment into a genuine platform.
AutoTech Detroit 2024 closed with a session that pulled the week's threads together. George Ayres, Managing Director at AutoMobility Advisors, served as track chair and moderated “Refining the IVI Experience: Exploring Opportunities Beyond the Dashboard,” bringing OEM, supplier, and standards voices onto one stage to talk about what production-ready infotainment actually demands.
The starting point was a familiar tension: customers arrive expecting the responsiveness of their phone, while automakers have to deliver that inside a safety-critical, long-lifecycle product. The panel worked through where standardization helps and where it constrains — simplifying integration for OEMs, agreeing on generic data definitions, and building on open standards so a third-party ecosystem can form without every partner negotiating a bespoke interface.
Cost feasibility ran underneath the whole conversation. A platform only attracts developers if the path to the vehicle is affordable and repeatable; otherwise the ecosystem stays a slide. Panelists also weighed in-vehicle security and identity, including biometric approaches already proven on smartphones, and how consent and privacy expectations shape what data can realistically move.
The most useful reframing came at the end: the opportunity beyond the dashboard is less about the screen and more about the services, identity, and data pathways behind it. Refining the IVI experience means balancing customer expectations against standardization — enabling a robust third-party ecosystem without compromising safety or privacy.
Thanks to the panelists and to the AutoTech Detroit team for a strong close to the week.
