George Ayres presented a ground-level read on China's electric vehicle industry and what its trajectory means for automakers, suppliers, and technology companies operating in the U.S. market.

George Ayres, Managing Director of AutoMobility Advisors, joined industry leaders at Battery Show South to present a ground-level read on China's electric vehicle industry and what its trajectory means for automakers, suppliers, and technology companies operating in the U.S. market.

Fierce competition and rapid cycles

China became the world's largest EV market in 2015. Today it accounts for roughly 50% of global EV sales. BYD has surpassed Tesla as the global leader in EV sales volume. Chinese automakers refresh their vehicle models on an 18-month cycle, compared to 5.2 years for most Western brands. The cost advantages built into the Chinese manufacturing ecosystem, driven by domestic battery supply chains, government R&D investment totaling $15 billion under the Made in China 2025 program, and fierce domestic competition, produce vehicles at price points U.S. tariffs alone cannot neutralize.

Chinese automakers refresh their vehicle models on an 18-month cycle, compared to 5.2 years for most Western brands.

Drawing on 30 years in automotive, including roles at Ford, Jaguar, Verizon's connected services division, and IBM's automotive IoT group, George walked the audience through the data, the supply chain dynamics, and the competitive pressures now reshaping the global EV landscape.

Barriers and adjacent moves

George covered the specific barriers to U.S. market entry that Chinese automakers face, from franchise dealer networks and FMVSS compliance requirements to data security concerns around always-on connected vehicles. He also walked through the adjacent market moves worth watching closely, including three Chinese automakers pushing into Canada in 2026 with 15 more planned to follow, Stellantis's partnership with Leap Motor, and the growing used and nearly-new EV market now accessible to American consumers.

The presentation included data from AlixPartners on ADAS penetration rates and model cycle times, a discussion of NIO's 1,000-station battery swap network in China, and a look at what it means that Toyota built a sedan for China priced at $21,000, roughly $13,000 less than a Tesla Model S in the same market.

The white paper that informed this presentation, covering China EV strategy, supply chain dynamics, and implications for U.S. automotive, is available for download at the AutoMobility Advisors website.
